I haven't woven with handspun myself (yet), but I know a couple people who have. The main advice I was given is that to spin a yarn strong enough for warp, you need a lot of twist. Plying was also highly recommended for added strength. Of course, you can use just about any kind of yarn for weft, so you could spin for weft and use commercial warp. Hope that helps!
