My guess is that the end with the widest width was the beginning of your shawl and the end with the narrower was the end. As you wove, your weaving got narrower because of "draw-in". This can be prevented by careful attention to your weaving. Be sure to angle your weft as you throw the shuttle. In the beginning it also helps to keep a close eye on the width of your weaving by actually measuring it. You may also find that it will help to use a temple.
