weaving question

Been weaving scarves so I've not been trying to put a long warp on the loom but it seems getting the tension even on every warp thread is the hardest part. Putting it through the reed and heddles is tedious but getting even tension, for me, is the trickiest. Is there an easier, more fulllproof way? I warp from the front to the back and because I'm working with a fairly short warp (96 inches) I've just been securing the 'figure eight' but not using choke ties when I take it off the warping board. I do put a loose knot in the end. Any suggestions? Thanks for your ideas.
