I have no idea the age of the wheel. I got the wheel in a box in pieces from a college student who bought it secondhand somewhere. She wanted to learn to spin, but didn't know how to put the wheel together. I showed her what the pieces were and discovered the footman was missing.

It could a reproduction, but some elements seem old. It has been a bit of a mystery to me, not having experience with antique wheels. It has a couple of blue stickers on it which appear to be from when it was shipped by a mover. I doubt if it has any historic significance to the area I live in, Bellingham, WA, since the college student wasn't from the area. That is pretty much all I know.

The footman would be easy to repair. I repaired the treadle where pieces were loose and the leather hinge was missing. The tension knobs seem to work fine and adjust the flyer up and down -- each flyer adjusts independently. The whole wheel comes apart easily and would be easy to ship. Right now it isn't put together tightly, one would need to fine tune and tighten down the pieces. In one of the pictures you can see two leather shims I used to steady the wheel without tightening it down.

Feel free to ask more questions. -- Julie
