The trick is to take them off correctly. Heddles have a left and right side as well as a top and bottom. On flat steel heddles the curvy slot is the top for right handers, and the holes should all line up facing in the same direction. When you set up your loom make sure all the hedddles are positioned correctly. Then, when you want to take some off, thread a long string through the top holes, then through the bottom holes from the same side. Now both free ends are on the same side of the group. Take the ends and draw them through the heddle eyes and tie them around the string that goes from the top to the bottom of the group. This will hold them neatly and snugly in position to take off and store or move to another position on the loom. Do not untie until you are sure you have them correctly positioned. You can use a thin heddle hook or a spare heddle to use as a "needle" to pull the string through.
Whenever we get a loom donated where I teach, the first thing I do is remove ALL the heddles and get them straight before returning them to the loom.
For wire heddles you will have to look carefully at the direction of the twist and match it for each heddle - Z or S - before you tie them off. I usually do this at the top "neck". Running the string through the eyes is usually too much trouble. Just make sure you tie the heddle groups with one continuous string through the tops, down one side, and through the bottoms, then out on the same side where you started. Tie the free ends together snugly so there is less twisting and squirming of the heddles on the string.
When you have moved the bundle of heddles to the new position on another heddle frame, don't untie them until you are SURE they are all on the bar - top and bottom. SQ
