I wish I could say that the time was short. For me, it was not. After 10 hours or so I could spin very basic yarn (I have a basket of this yarn and have no idea what to do with it). After 4 months or so, I had a yarn nice enough to knit a very nice sweater. However, during this learning phase, I was trying different fibers, always looking for a softer product. Merino wool is the one I like best. Difficult to learn to spin but once you have the feel for the shorter fiber, the results are beautiful. However, after 10 years of spinning (a lot) I have just spun 6 ounces of an alpaca/silk blend and what a difficult time I had with it. However, when I get frustrated, I go back to my tried and true Merino and spin.
