There are several factors that come into play. If it's a bumpy or thick yarn, are the heddles going to shred it? Try running it through a heddle and see how it does. Another thing to try is taking several strands of yarn and pulling on them. If it's a whispy yarn that pulls apart, it's obviously not going to do. Other than that, pretty much any yarn can be a warp, if the sett is right.
