Does the beam have the four holes drilled into the end of it, or on the outside of the beam? Does the beam sit in a slots on either side of the loom? Does one end appear to be missing (won't sit in the slot nicely)? If so, it might've been a friction brake, which is how mine is (I have an old counterbalance). If you like, I can send you pictures. Other than that, can't help you.
