My husband bought me a 45" folding Allen loom for Christmas 2003. He paid $250. It is a 4H, 6T, high castle w/ shelf and included 400 heddles and a homemade bench, although no other accessories. My college fibre arts prof. recommended an Allen loom for me years ago, and now I have one! The man from whom we bought it is a rug weaver and he found it a bit light (weight) to beat some of his heavier rugs, but with the help of a brass beater fork, made them anyway. I think I will try to weight it with some sandbags on the back beam when I weave my first rag rug. (D. Chandler in "Learning to Weave" recommends using iron bars) So far, it's been a very versatile loom and I really enjoy its portability, especially its ability to fold compactly, even when warped. :-)
