Debbie, I too am a beginning weaver, watch out, its adictive. You dont have to use all of the shafts in an 8H loom, I have seen patterns for 2,4,5,6, and 8 that can be done on 8H. You are able to do more intricate patterns on 8H than on 4H. I decided before I aquired my 8H to go that way so I have enough shafts to do some of the patterns that I want. I have done about a dozen projects on my 8H loom, but only 2 of them have been on all 8H. My 46" loom has been heavy enough to do rag rugs, so thats what I did for Chrismas gifts, and they only required 4H. One of the patterns was for 2H and I expanded it to 4H so the treadling would be easier. I have talked to about 5 other people who have Kessenich looms, and they are all happy with them. There is another good fiber site, All Fiber Arts, that has really good info and a forum, its a fun site, check it out. Good luck and good weaving.
