You thread the tool, insert the needle side into the fabric, and push. This causes the tool to "walk" with an up and down motion, tufting the yarn or fabric through the backing fabric. This causes a hooked rug appearance on the right side of the rub backing fabric. You are tufting (pushing) your yarn etc., from the back to the front. It's easiest to use this tool if your rug backing fabric is in an upright position and tautly stretched.
